Famous comedian Andrew Schulz recently decided to get some BJJ and striking training in, so he connected with top UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley and his coach Tim Welch in order to make sure he was learning from some of the best around. The meeting actually took place during the build-up for UFC 292, which was where O’Malley was due to challenge for a title for the first time in his career. O’Malley knocked out Aljamain Sterling at the event and became the bantamweight world champion, a title he has since defended by winning a unanimous decision over Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 299.
The session starts out with Schulz going through some warm-ups with Welch and O’Malley first, before Welch takes him on the pads to work his striking. That’s when they move on to grappling and Schulz immediately explains that he has never grappled before, so Welch gives him the simplest breakdown of the sport. He explains “We’re trying to get the takedowns, get on top, pass the guard.” which is an accurate summary of Jiu-Jitsu as a whole really. The pair start rolling together and Welch is clearly letting Schulz work through positions, and Schulz even attempts a rudimentary triangle choke at one point.
After a round of BJJ, Tim Welch and Sean O’Malley start demonstrating a few submissions and teaching Andrew Schulz how to finish each of them. They go through a guillotine choke and a rear-naked choke before showing him how to properly finish the triangle choke he attempted earlier. Schulz threw himself into the experience and clearly gave it his all, something that not many celebrities would ever be willing to do. He deserves some respect for that alone and it’ll be interesting to see if he decides to go deeper into the sport in the future as well.
