Footage has recently emerged of top MMA fighter Bryce Mitchell showing 10th Planet founder Eddie Bravo an entry to the twister that he’s never seen before. Although Bravo didn’t actually invent the twister, he’s famous for adapting it for use in Jiu-Jitsu and popularising it as a submission. Prior to him developing it as a submission, the position was actually called the guillotine and was used in freestyle wrestling. Among other areas like the lockdown and rubber guard, the twister is one of the techniques that is almost synonymous with Bravo and several of his students at 10th Planet have become masters of it.
Although Mitchell has undergone his journey through the BJJ ranks at a different affiliation, he has also become a master of the twister as well. He’s actually one of just three fighters who have ever finished a UFC fight with the twister. It was back in 2019 and that submission win actually marked the 12th win of his MMA career, and his 9th finish. Mitchell was undefeated and quickly rising up the featherweight rankings at the time, where he currently sits at thirteenth. Mitchell has experienced some losses now but he holds a 17-2 professional MMA record and he’s coming off a big TKO win over Kron Gracie in his last fight.
The entry to the twister that Bryce Mitchell showed Eddie Bravo is specifically for his area of expertise, MMA. That’s because it requires the use of strikes on the ground in order to set it up. The entry is available when someone is attacking a turtled opponent and they’ve got control of the near-side hand, pulling it across the chest from behind. From there, the idea is to land strikes with the free hand in order to encourage the opponent to try to break that wrist-control, which then opens the space needed for the upper body portion of a twister. The legs shoot into position at the same time and all that’s left to do at that point is reach over the head for the finish.
