Ryan Garcia is one of the most exciting young talents in the boxing world right now, and he’s recently started training BJJ under Rener Gracie too. The pair were seen together after their training session initially, but now footage has been revealed of the first time that Garcia decided to put on a gi. Garcia is not only an incredible boxer in general, but he’s easily one of the most interesting prospects across any combat sport. He picked up boxing gloves for the first time when he was just 7 years old and immediately got to work on building an impressive amateur record.
Garcia put together a 215-15 amateur record by the time he ended his time at those ranks and decided to begin his professional boxing career. Ever since that point there has been absolutely no stopping his rise to the top. Garcia has put together a perfect 23-0 record at the time of writing and has barely seen any difficulty during those fights. He has knocked out nineteen of his opponents and has won several minor boxing titles, before he eventually added the WBC interim Lightweight world title to his collection.
Ryan Garcia is undoubtedly single-minded in his focus and will be sticking with boxing for the foreseeable future as he attempts to reach the very top of the mountain, but the news that he is trying his hand at BJJ with Rener Gracie is definitely interesting. Garcia is still only 24 years old and will likely be a full world champion some time soon, so he still has plenty of time left to transition to MMA if he so chooses. Claressa Shields picked up BJJ and managed to make the switch to MMA while still maintaining her status as one of the best boxers on the planet, so it stands to reason that Garcia could likely achieve this too.
The footage of Ryan Garcia taking his first BJJ class from Rener Gracie was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of the Gracie Breakdown:
