A local BJJ purple belt in Ireland went viral recently when he shared footage of him rushing in to save a woman from an unknown attacker. Not only was it a remarkable display of individual heroism, but it was also a great reminder that the skills you practice on the mat can potentially save either yourself or someone else one day. Andy Murray is the grappler who intervened, and it was only by complete chance that he had the opportunity to do so. If someone without any training found themselves in the same scenario then it could have gone much differently.
Murray drove into a car park and saw a woman being attacked by a man, so he quickly set up his phone to record and ran out of the car to save her from him. He was able to get in between them very quickly and he used his BJJ experience to get a hold of the attacker, bringing him to the ground and restraining him immediately. That gave the woman the chance to run away to safety, and Murray explained in the post that he put the attacker out cold before catching back up with her to make sure she was okay.
Murray was also asked in the comments of the footage, why he chose to set up a camera when he saw that the woman was under attack. It was actually the result of some very quick thinking on his part, and he was quick to explain the reason behind recording the incident:
“For my protection. I knew what I was going to do. And I knew he would be safe. So I had to keep my record of it for my safety. Plus, you can see he is attacking her at the start.”
