An Australian BJJ brown belt recently went viral when he leapt into action to stop an alleged home invader at his neighbour’s house. The story was originally reported by news.com.au and it is a great example of how years of training in the sport can help someone in an altercation. The news outlet were able to speak to Brian D., the BJJ practitioner who ran to his neighbour’s assistance, in order to get his version of events. Brian says that he heard “banging and screaming” and went to his front door to find out what was going on, being greeted by a woman:
“She basically said she needed help, and some man had broken into her house and I kind of just put pants on and ran outside.”
Although Brian couldn’t see the alleged intruder he was able to see a broken fence and a damaged side door, evidence that something was wrong. When he did find the man in question, Brian claims that he had ‘a piece of wood with nails in it’ and that he then threw it at him. Although the other man ran into a nearby room, Brian continued to intervene and he was eventually able to take him down and restrain him until law enforcement arrived. Brian explained just how stressful the situation was:
“My adrenaline was pumping at the time, said a few bad things, grabbed hold of him and got him into a position where I could immobilise him.”
The New South Wales police also gave a comment to news.com.au on the situation:
“Officers attached to Burwood Area Command attended and were told a man, allegedly armed with a piece of timber, damaged a side gate before entering the house… A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Burwood Police Station. He was charged with aggravated break and enter and will appear before Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 10 December 2024.”
