UFC welterweight veteran Alan Jouban has just been promoted to 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu black belt by the affiliation’s head coach and founder, Eddie Bravo. Jouban has been retired from professional MMA since 2021, but he was active for over a decade and shared the cage with some of the best in the world during that time. He was always an athlete but he didn’t start his combat sports career until 2005 when he took up Muay Thai, putting together an undefeated amateur record in the sport. That eventually led Jouban to MMA and he was equally impressive after making the transition.
Jouban travelled all around the USA competing for various promotions on the regional MMA circuit, amassing a 9-2 professional record in his first 3 years. That led to Jouban receiving the offer to compete in the UFC and he made his promotional debut with a knockout win over Seth Baczynski in 2014. That was awarded ‘Fight of the Night’ and he received that honour twice more over the course of his career, becoming known for having lethal striking and an exciting style.
He stayed with the UFC for the rest of his career, retiring with a 17-7 professional record in 2021 after getting wins over some big names like Belal Muhammad and Ben Saunders. Although Alan Jouban was always known as a striker first and foremost, he worked extensively with 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu to develop his grappling over the years. Like many professional fighters, Jouban has remained a student of the game even after retiring from competition and this black belt promotion represents an incredible amount of time on the mats alongside Bravo and the other leading figures at 10th Planet.
