UFC Vegas 109 took place on August 9th, 2025 and there was a ton of highlights for grappling fans to enjoy. There were a few decisions and some knockouts to kick the card off, but it was just a few matches into the preliminary card that the first highlight-reel grappling exchange came about. Elijah Smith was coming into his second UFC fight eager to get a finish and things almost went the other way against Toshiomi Kazama. Smith came out aggressively and got taken down, but a quick reversal got him out of trouble. Kazama started threatening submissions off his back and had Smith in some difficult spots, but it was a triangle choke that sealed the deal. For Smith, that is.
Kazama set up the triangle choke expertly and was about to lock it in fully when Smith hauled him up into the air above his shoulders and delivered a slam that Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson would have been proud of to knock him out. It took until the main event for the next finish, but Anthony Hernandez delivered something worth the wait. He dominated Roman Dolidze both in striking and grappling across three whole rounds before finding the finish in the fourth. The performance was flawless but the finish was a brutal standing rear-naked choke that dragged Dolidze back with force.
