UFC BJJ has now revealed their world championship belts ahead of the grand finale of the new reality show. It’s been quite a long time coming now as the biggest combat sports promotion in the world has been slowly putting together plans for their flagship Jiu-Jitsu event for several years. The UFC Fight Pass Invitational was a solid event featuring some of the biggest names in the sport, but they never crowned a single champion during it’s run. Instead they appear to have been saving that status for their reality show, with the first season featuring both welterweights and lightweights battling it out for the inaugural title.
Not only will the finale see both of those champions crowned, but the flyweight title is also up for grabs in the coach’s match between Mikey Musumeci and Rerisson Gabriel. It seems as though the show isn’t going to end there either, as all measurements indicate that it’s been a success. There’s another five belts in the men’s divisions that are vacant and at least three in the women’s divisions, assuming they continue following MMA weight classes. That should provide them with enough material for at least three more seasons of the show and given that the UFC is apparently making an eight-figure investment in the sport, they should have the funds to cover that too.
With the amount of buzz surrounding both the show and the idea of having a UFC BJJ division in general, fans were always going to have high hopes for it. There has been plenty of fair criticism aimed at the use of exclusive contracts and several production choices that the show has made, alongside plenty of unfair criticism too. It’s too early to give a final opinion with the finale still to come, but the reveal of the UFC BJJ Championship belts is something anyone can weigh in on. They’ve clearly taken a very different approach to designing the belt compared to the UFC belts, and it’s proven to be quite divisive.
