Further details have emerged about the recent arrest of BJ Penn after his mother, Lorraine Shin, has filed a restraining order against him. The news has gone from bad to worse for Penn, who has been sharing troubling posts on social media for quite some time now. Initial reports about the arrest were only able to cite the official charge of “Abuse of family or household member: offensive physical contact”, but MMAFighting has now been able to obtain Shin’s request for a restraining order and her police statements. As originally suspected, the charges are related to Penn’s belief that members of his family have been replaced by imposters.
BJ Penn has been very open about these beliefs on social media long before this recent arrest, but his behaviour has allegedly been escalating. Shin’s statement to the police accused Penn of “extreme psychological abuse towards me for over the past several months, that I am not Lorraine Shin, I killed his family and have taken over his mother’s identity, and he wants me to be removed from his home.” Shin alleges that when she returned from a trip on May 11th only to find that “all my belongings such as clothes, shoes, jewelry, personal items, and my bed removed from my bedroom.”
Then on May 16th, Shin explained that “my personal purse with my driver’s license, credit card and locks for my safe were stolen” and this is when she filed a separate theft report. Shin says this is when she decided to install a deadbolt lock on the door and security cameras around the home, but she claims that Penn allegedly “placed duct tape on my video cameras to block video camera and placed glue into my deadbolt on my bedroom door to stop me from entering my bedroom.” On May 25th, Shin returned from another trip and allegedly found that her deadbolt had been glued shut and was not able to access her room.
Shin claims that her son, Reagan Penn, then had to gain access through a window instead in order to let her in. She also claims that she found no mail in her mailbox upon her return and even though Penn denied taking her mail, she claims that she later saw it in the backseat of his car and attempted to call the police again. That’s when Penn allegedly shone a flashlight in her face according to MMAFighting’s report, and:
“I tried turning in several directions and he continued to blind me with his flashlight,” Shin explained. “I then tried to grab the flashlight and remove it from my face and then he grabbed my arms and shoved me against the 4-door gray sedan, which I felt a sharp pain in my back. I then started to scream at the top of my voice for my son Reagan Penn to help me.
Penn was arrested and told to stay away from Shin’s home for 48 hours but, according to MMAFighting, he returned and was arrested once again. Shin has since applied for a restraining order against BJ Penn:
“I believe my son [BJ Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome (a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter). He believes I’m an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.”
“In the best interest for my safety, I ask the court for a six month [temporary restraining order] and have my son ordered to get medical treatment or other source of therapy.”
