ONE Friday Fights 76 took place on August 23rd, 2024 and the Tomoshige Sera opened the show by delivering some big results. He faced Magomed Matiev in a submission grappling match in the ONE Championship lightweight division and although Matiev acted fast to attempt a standing guillotine choke, Sera countered with a quick takedown into side control to escape. Sera popped back up to his feet and let Matiev stand back up so that he could start putting his Judo background to good use, but Matiev was battling for inside position very well to make it difficult for him to get the takedown.
They stayed standing for over a minute before Sera leapt into a flying armbar and almost managed to get the tap, fully extending Matiev’s arm and earning a catch. Matiev hit a lovely hitchhiker escape to come up on top and he started trying to pass from standing, but Sera was able to get an entry to the bear-trap and use it to sweep. Matiev scrambled back and tried to hit a quick berimbolo, using the threat of it to come up on top and start passing again. Matiev secured an underhook and locked up head and arm control, pressuring forward to try and slide into mount.
Sera did a great job of using his legs to keep enough space for him to work butterfly hooks in and eventually he was able to elevate Matiev and break free of the head and arm control. Sera transitioned to closed guard and worked methodically to set up a triangle choke from there, locking it up just as Matiev stood up. Sera got the underhook on the leg to prevent Matiev from lifting him and he cut the angle, pulling the leg in and sitting Matiev down to force the tap.
