Hollywood star Tom Hardy has just been promoted to brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu after spending the last few years training in the sport. It’s been a long and winding road for him, as he first started learning Jiu-Jitsu all the way back in 2011 when he started in the MMA film ‘The Warrior’ and it was part of his role. He started to take it more seriously a few years later and was eventually promoted to blue belt in 2020. He has kept up that training schedule alongside his work as an actor ever since, eventually receiving his purple belt halfway through 2023.
Although BJJ has become increasingly popular among celebrities recently, Hardy is one of the few that appears to take it as seriously as possible. He’s dived headfirst into grappling and travelled all around the world to train with some of the best minds in the sport like Mikey Musumeci, and even tested himself in ways that the majority of famous people in Jiu-Jitsu never do. While some avoid sparring altogether, Hardy has been actively competing and winning on the local competition circuit. All this to say that Hardy has undoubtedly worked incredibly hard to get where he is right now.
Hardy was awarded his brown belt by Sonny Weston at Horsham BJJ and Tom DeBlass actually travelled all the way over to the UK in order to be present at the promotion ceremony. DeBlass explained that he and Hardy are actually good friends, and he regularly shares techniques with Hardy. That just goes to show how involved Hardy is with the sport, and how often he actually thinks about improving his skills on the mat. Although his schedule is undeniably busy, it’ll be interesting to see if Hardy decides to return to competition now he’s at a new belt level.
Tom DeBlass shared the news that Tom Hardy had been promoted to brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu in a recent post to his official Instagram account:
