Submission Underground 27 delivered some exciting results once again, in an event headlined by Mason Fowler defending his absolute championship once again. This time he put the belt on the line against one of the promotional fan-favorites Gabriel Checco and although he wasn’t able to submit him within the regulation time-period, he excelled in EBI overtime and locked up a rear-naked choke to retain his title. This marks Fowler’s twelfth straight win in the SUG cage and his eighth straight title-defense, meaning that Chael Sonnen and his matchmakers have their hands full trying to find suitable opponents for him.
Fowler has even taken to calling for huge challenges lately, as he even wanted a grappling match with former UFC welterweight and middleweight world champion, Georges St-Pierre. There isn’t really many people left that regularly compete in the SUG cage who could present a tough test for Fowler and it might be time for matchmakers to look outside their usual talent pool to find an appropriate challenger.
