Submission Underground 22 saw another return for Tag-Team Jiu-Jitsu as Ricky Simon and John Simon sought to defend the title that they won at the very last SUG event. Unfortunately, they ended up on the losing end this time around as they were defeated by Chris Lencioni and Owen Papworth, who represented Team SAC. Lencioni is perhaps best known for his MMA career that most recently saw him dominating elite grappler AJ Agazarm at Bellator 243, the same fight that ended up leaving Agazarm with the brutal knee injury that has kept him out of competing ever since.
The main event then saw another title on the line as Mason Fowler took on Andy Varela, who earned the shot after winning four consecutive matches in the SUG cage. Fowler managed to retain his title after the match went in to EBI overtime by locking up a Rear-Naked Choke early on in the first round of overtime. As has become pretty customary for Submission Underground, the majority of the matchups reached the end of the five-minute regulation time period and went on to be decided in overtime with only four matches ending in a finish before that point.
