The IBJJF have just confirmed the 8 incredible grapplers involved in the women’s lightweight division of the latest edition of The Crown on November 17th, 2024. This is the second women’s bracket that will be contested at the event after the lineup for the impressive super-heavyweight division was announced first. That’s it as far as female competitors go, but there will be a total of 16 women hitting the mats in just these two divisions alone. Thanks to the IBJJF deciding to double the size of all the brackets, there’s a ton of elite female talent making an appearance at The Crown in 2024.
The inaugural edition of The Crown took place last year and it was Luiza Monteiro who managed to emerge victorious in this weight class back then. She’ll be returning to defend her title this time around and she’s riding a wave of momentum after retiring from the IBJJF World Championship on the night of her third gold medal at the prestigious event. Although Monteiro is the obvious favorite as the reigning champion, most of the this bracket did not compete in this event last year. The only other two who have previous experience at The Crown are Janaina Lebre and Brianna Ste-Marie, who finished third and fourth respectively.
Another serious contender in the women’s lightweight division of The Crown 2024 is top IBJJF featherweight Margot Ciccarelli, who will be moving up in weight to challenge herself here. Ciccarelli isn’t the only one who will be at a bit of a size disadvantage in this division though, as Vitoria Assis also normally competes at featherweight. Both of these women will be tough to beat regardless though, and Ciccarelli in particular stood on the podium at the IBJJF World Championship 2024. She isn’t the only medalist from this year’s world championship here either, as half the bracket won a medal at either featherweight or lightweight.
Jaine Fragoso was one of the other medalists this year, as she came away with a bronze medal at lightweight and will be eager to prove herself again now. She will be joined by one of the other top lightweight competitors around right now, the exciting GF Team star Vitoria Vieira. The bracket will then be rounded out by one of the most exciting young prospects in the sport right now, Cassia Moura. Not only did Moura win the brown belt featherweight division at the IBJJF World Championship this year, but she made headlines by completing an incredible run from blue to black belt in a little under a year.
