The Sapateiro World Championship 2024 is now underway as the Florida Qualifier tournament took place on March 9th, 2024 and the first competitor has now booked his place in the final event with a $100,000 prize on the line. With a chance at this much money on the line there was always going to be some incredibly talented grapplers entering the tournament, but the lineup was stacked with some of the best competitors in the 160lbs division. There was always going to be a ton of action given the number of elite competitors who had been included in the bracket, but the tournament really did deliver even more entertainment than expected.
One side of the bracket contained Dominic Mejia and Max Hanson, and both men stormed in to the semi-final against one another by beating some really tough opposition. In the end it was Hanson who was able to get the submission win in order to book his place in the final, but there was an even more interesting story developing in the other half of the bracket. The other semi-final was a family affair as Gavin Corbe and Deandre Corbe both won their first two matches by submission to set up a battle between the brothers for a spot in the final against Hanson.
It was Deandre Corbe who won that match on points and he progressed to the final, while Gavin met Mejia in the third-place match instead. Gavin was able to rally after his only loss of the day in order to win a decision against Mejia, shortly before Deandre took to the mats. Deandre managed to keep his perfect record at the Sapateiro World Championship 2024 Florida Qualifier by submitting Hanson in the final, guaranteeing himself a chance at the $100,000 grand prize. The brothers finished the event with a collective 7-1 record with 5 submission wins and the only loss coming between them, an incredible achievement for the young competitors.
