UFC Vegas 102 took place on February 15th, 2025 and it featured Rodolfo Vieira making his return to MMA after a year-long absence from the cage. He was coming into the fight riding a winning streak for the first time since 2020 and he seemed to be starting a climb up the promotion’s middleweight rankings. Vieira was booked against Andre Petroski and he was also coming in off back-to-back wins, so it was always going to a tough fight. It wasn’t clear how much a year away from fighting would have affected Vieira, but he did look fantastic in a grappling match against Derek Brunson at ADXC 7.
Vieira wasn’t really able to show off his elite grappling against Petroski in the end, and Petroski had clearly prepared for that threat well during his training camp. He only landed one out of eleven takedowns across all three rounds, so the fight was almost entirely decided by the action on the feet. Vieira showed improvement in his striking, throwing with more accuracy than Petroski and even managing to win the second round as a result. The other two rounds were much closer though and Petroski won both of them on all three judges’ scorecards, earning him the unanimous decision win.
