The IBJJF Fortaleza Open 2023 took place over June 24th and 25th, 2023 and the tournament attracted some of the best competitors from around Brazil along with one very surprising name. UFC legend Renan Barao returned to BJJ competition at the event, winning gold in the gi in the Master 2 lightweight division on the first day. The adult division of that same weight was won by one of the newest members of the ATOS competition team, veteran black belt Israel Almeida. The only man to walk away with two gold medals from the adult divisions on the first day was another experienced competitor, as elite-level Judo black belt Felipe Bezerra won both the ultra-heavyweight division and the absolute division.
The women’s divisions also produced a double champion on the first day, as Ingridd Alves managed to win gold medals in both the heavyweight and absolute divisions. Alves returned on the second day of the tournament to compete in the no gi divisions too, where she repeated that same achievement. She moved up to the super-heavyweight division this time and after she won it, she went on to win the absolute division as well. Alves wasn’t the only big name competing on the second day of the IBJJF Fortaleza Open 2023 either, as several top competitors decided to take to the mats.
Pedro Agrizzi was the double champion of the men’s divisions on that day, winning gold at super-heavyweight and in the absolute division. It was impressive considering he only managed a single silver medal on the first day, so he clearly came back with a vengeance after the day was over. All in all, the IBJJF Fortaleza Open 2023 was a great weekend of high-level grappling and it featured a number of young up-and-coming prospects competing in the colored belt divisions that might have bright futures ahead of them.
