Relson Gracie recently sat down for an interview and the topic eventually crossed over to his nephew with the top-tier MMA career, Kron Gracie. Apparently, Relson believes that Kron has been focusing too much on changing what initially gave him success in combat sports and is trying to box too much. Kron started off with a perfect 5-0 record in MMA that included his UFC debut against Alex Caceres that saw him lock up a rear-naked choke inside the first round.
His most recent trip to the octagon was not as successful however as he came up short with a decision loss in what was essentially a striking match with Cub Swanson. Since then, Kron has moved to Montana to open up a new Jiu-Jitsu gym but hasn’t actually competed in the UFC since that night, just a few months shy of two years ago now. Should he ever return, Relson believes that returning to his roots in BJJ is what will give him the most success and it’s hard to imagine he would say anything different being one of Helio Gracie’s nine children.
“These changes, these new coaches, who come with the mentality that you have to know how to change… You don’t need to know how to change anything. He’s training with those kids (Nick and Nate Diaz), this whole gang is made out of changers. I would never do boxing, you don’t need to do boxing.”
“Come train with me. If he moves to Brazil, he spends three months here with me. Go back to being a fast world champion. It takes six months of classes here with me, I change Kron. I will sign: if he loses, I stop teaching.”
“In three months, this boy won’t throw another punch. He’s going back to its origins.”
The above quote about Kron Gracie has been roughly translated from the original Portuguese and the full interview with Relson Gracie can be seen below, in a video that was originally uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Canal Do Marinho:
