Pit Submission Series 9 took place on November 14th, 2024 and the promotion put together a pair of matches that delivered fun results. The event was staged on the same night as the latest Karate Combat event as always, and that meant that it was a wild night of action all around. The promotion normally puts together three or more matches for each PSS event but this time around there was just two on the card, so there was a lot of pressure on those four grapplers to deliver the results. That’s exactly what they did though, as both of the matches were impressive performances by the respective winners.
Magomet Matiev and Jun-Yong Kim were up first and Kim wasted no time in driving Matiev up the pit wall, but he couldn’t capitalise on that with a takedown. Matiev hit a clean armdrag out in the open and Kim dropped to the mat to defend it, but it was too late. Matiev used a chair-sit to take the back and immediately started working for the rear-naked choke. He transitioned to a body-triangle and with the extra control that afforded him, it was only a matter of seconds before he sunk the choke in underneath Kim’s neck and forced him to tap.
Rodrigo Caporal and Nala Gontijo were competing in the main event, with both men coming out strong from the start. They battled for dominant position in the clinch, and Caporal charged in for an early takedown that was briefly reversed. He was thrown into the pit wall but quickly recovered, and it wasn’t long before he got control of Gontijo’s back and hit a nice mat return. Gontijo bounced back up and broke free, getting back to wrestling with Caporal. After a while he was able to hit a harai goshi that allowed him to secure top position, but Caporal scrambled back to his feet shortly after.
Gontijo attempted another harai goshi with a little over a minute left and Caporal held his balance well in order to get control of his back again. Gontijo countered quickly by rolling through for a kneebar but Caporal shut that down and forced his opponent into half-guard. Caporal had an underhook and crossface but when he tried to pass from there, Gontijo got the space he needed to get back up. Caporal pushed Gontijo up the wall and he leapt into a flying triangle choke, but he couldn’t catch it and landed on the floor instead. Gontijo started to wrestle up and the first round ended with him in turtle.
They started back up on the feet again and they were both visibly slowed this time around, but Gontijo hit a slick inside trip takedown after a little over a minute. He couldn’t keep Caporal there for long though and they were back to battling it out in the clinch. Caporal ran Gontijo into the wall with double-underhooks and finished the takedown off it, settling into side control for a while. Gontijo was able to create space and threaten an armbar to re-guard, eventually standing up for a moment before being dragged back down.
Caporal started using heavy pressure from half-guard again and this time he was able to finish the pass into side control, keeping the crossface he passed with. Gontijo was able to escape and get into the bear-trap position, but Caporal kept up his heavy top pressure to shut down any offense. He eventually slid his leg free and into mount, before stepping off to side control to keep Gontijo pinned. Caporal switched to north south as Gontijo tried to escape and although Gontijo was able to turn to turtle and wrestle up, the round ended shortly after. When the judges read the results, Caporal was declared the winner by majority decision in the main event of Pit Submission Series 9.
