Top English grappler Owen Jones has now released an instructional entitled Leglocks For Short Kings that aims to provide a complete overview of that specific area of the sport. Although he’s still young, Jones has quickly established himself as one of the top no gi competitors in Europe after an incredible performance at both ADCC Trials and ADCC 2024. Jones made a big impact by beating top competitors at both of those events and has become known for his fantastic leglock game, something he’s been able to condense into an instructional ready for fans to dive into.

Owen Jones: Leglocks For Short Kings Review

Owen Jones: Leglocks For Short Kings is divided into three different chapters for a total of over an hour and a half of content, all focused around one specific area. Despite being relatively young compared to many other coaches, Jones is still a solid instructor and he’s able to communicate his approach clearly and concisely. Not only is that a vital skill when it comes to teaching, but he has also proven the effectiveness of what he does against the very best in the world. Jones had a breakout performance at ADCC 2024 and one of his two submission wins is a perfect example of some of the elements of this instructional.

Concepts

The first section of this instructional focuses more on the broader principles that make leg attacks work and it’s something that’s sorely missing from a lot of other releases. It’s refreshingly simple and he breaks these core principles down in a way that’s easily digestible. It also helps make sure that even those who are completely new to attacking the legs can follow along, as they can spend time working this section alone at first. Even by just doing this, practitioners will be able to effectively off-balance opponents and understand the strengths and weaknesses of each position.

Finishes

In the second section of Leglocks For Short Kings, Owen Jones goes on to discuss the various submission finishes that are available from each position. His break down of both the Aoki Lock and the Tren Lock are fantastic, making it simple enough for newer people while also providing details to benefit seasoned grapplers. There’s also plenty of variety in the finishes that Jones provides; as he goes through heel hooks, straight ankle-locks, and even a modified toehold as well. Combining all of these attacks with the core principles in the first section makes for a lethal leglocking game, and the third and final section ties it all together.

Transitions

The third section of this instructional is where Jones links everything into one complete approach to attacking the legs, and it’s also where newer grapplers will probably find the biggest leap in performance. Knowing how to control from various positions and knowing how to finish opponents is one thing, but understanding how to transition between those positions and attacks is what takes someone to the next level. Jones goes through a wide range of ways to connect everything together, including chaining leg attacks to sweeps and upper body attacks as well.

Owen Jones: Leglocks For Short Kings Conclusion

Leglocks For Short Kings is a solid instructional and Owen Jones has done a great job of condensing everything that grappling fans have seen him do. He makes it simple and easy to understand, while also imparting high-level tactics and techniques at the same time. As the icing on the cake, he also explains some game-based sparring ideas at the end of the instructional as well. This is a great addition and particularly useful for those who plan on putting everything into practice during an open mat. Taking the time to play through those sparring games on a regular basis is an excellent way to add everything teaches into your game as quickly as possible.
