O Faixa Preta is a film that’s about the life of popular BJJ legend Fernando ‘Terere’ Augusto, and it’s due to start streaming on HBO Max on March 17th, 2023. The film will cover the life of Terere both on and off the mats, and his journey from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to becoming an IBJJF world champion twice over. He’s one of the most well-known figures in the sport of Jiu-Jitsu from the early 2000s, owing partly to his aggressive and exciting style and partly to his inspirational background.
Terere was born among some of the worst conditions imaginable, and he quickly got involved with selling drugs and escaping from the police while he was still a young teenager. He found Jiu-Jitsu and he began to experience the benefits almost immediately, working hard to develop himself instead of diving further into a life of crime. After a few years he managed to turn that hard work into success and won an IBJJF world championship in the blue belt division back in 1997. He was promoted to purple belt after that and quickly repeated that performance at his new level in 1998.
After another promotion he entered the IBJJF world championship at brown belt in 1999 and ended up winning once again, defeating MMA legend BJ Penn along the way to a gold medal. After that, Terere moved to train with Fabio Gurgel and became a permanent fixture on the podium of the black belt division from 2000 to 2004. He earned a pair of gold medals and a pair of silver medals in that time, but disappeared from competition for almost a decade after that due to drug dependency and a diagnosis of Schizophrenia. O Faixa Preta, the film about the life of Fernando ‘Terere’ Augusto first premiered in 2022 and was enjoyed by all who attended the premiere.
