The legendary Miyao brothers, Paulo and Joao, are preparing to open up their own academy in New Jersey called Studio 1908. It’s been an ongoing project for the pair of elite competitors for quite some time, but they’ve finally managed to secure a physical space and now they’re setting to work converting it into a functional gym. From first looks, the space looks huge and with two of the sport’s most famous brothers in charge it will almost certainly attract a ton of great competitors in every training session. Paulo Miyao also revealed the sentimental meaning behind the new gym’s name:
“In 1908 the first ship with Japanese immigrants landed in the port of Santos. Kasatu-maru was the beginning of everything. The immigrants arrived with the intention of working in agriculture, mainly in the huge coffee farms spread throughout brazil. My grandparents arrived years later and met when they were already here. The agricultural tradition, passed down from generation to generation, was passed on to my father by them. The agriculture always was a form of my ancestors express themselves. João and I followed another path to continue representing our roots. We chose the martial art jiu jitsu and we will do our best to keep the tradition of hard work, honest and bravery.”
There’s no news on when the Miyao brothers will be opening their new academy, but Studio 1908 is no doubt going to be a name that fans will hear over the next few years. It isn’t just about incredible competitors training hard though, as Paulo Miyao also revealed the kind of atmosphere that he and Joao want to foster in the academy as well:
“Studio 1908 is a community of helpers. In the past, the Cicero Costha academy, where I formed myself as athlete and as person, had this differential: everyone was willing to help each other. Everyone even not having the same goals and objectives helped each other, making the other’s goal their own. This will be our roots that will allow us to reach unimaginable heights, like a beautiful bamboo.”
