Mikey Musumeci has taken on every challenge that ONE Championship has been able to throw at him so far but he has something huge lined up for his next match, as he thinks it’s going to be against Demetrious Johnson. This isn’t actually the first time that the idea of a grappling match between the two legends of their respective sports has come up either, with Musumeci first bringing up the idea at the beginning of this year. He still had a few challengers to his ONE flyweight submission grappling title at the time though, so it seemed quite far-fetched at the time.
The idea didn’t get ignored by Johnson even at that time though, as he revealed that he was also interested in the idea of taking on Musumeci at his own game. Still, it didn’t seem as though the time was right for a superfight between them. The first title-defense that Musumeci had booked at the time went about as well as could be expected though, as he dominated Gantamur Bayanduuren and won an incredibly convincing decision. There was still another challenge left for him though and he had another title-defense booked shortly afterward against the reigning IBJJF no gi world champion in Musumeci’s weight class.
He submitted Osamah Almarwai after another beautiful display of Jiu-Jitsu though, and now the timing couldn’t be better for a superfight between two of ONE’s most popular champions in their respective disciplines. At least Mikey Musumeci thinks that the match with Demetrious Johnson will be next on his schedule:
“I think my next match will be with Demetrious Johnson. That’s what I think is gonna happen. So I’m really excited to fight a legend… To grapple a legend, don’t get mad at me guys for saying “fight”… So it would be an honor to grapple with him and that would probably be the biggest match of my life in grappling so far, like with viewership. I don’t know, just stepping on the mat with the “Mighty Mouse”, to touch a legend, would be so cool. That’s what I’m looking forward to and whatever else ONE has for me, I want to stay active and busy.”
