Mikey Musumeci will meet Geo Martinez for the second time in a little under a year at the upcoming Who’s Number One event on March 25th. The pair first met at the Road to ADCC event where Musumeci managed to come away with the victory after racking up six points against Martinez by the time that the round ended. Everything up to that point was a relatively standard affair, until the match ended however and all of a sudden things appeared to reach a boiling point between the two elite grapplers.
It turned out that the tension between the pair came from some things that Martinez said about Musumeci during the build-up to their match. Musumeci took some of his statements to heart and apparently felt a little taken aback by the fact that Martinez had previously seemed to be on good terms with him until they had a match booked against one another. For his part, Martinez doubled down on his earlier statements and appeared to show no regret for what he’d said to Musumeci.
This altercation is what led Mikey Musumeci to publicly ask for a rematch against Geo Martinez, because he believed that his emotions got the best of him and he wants to submit him in a match instead of winning on points. This could be the beginning of a long-running rivalry as both men are at the top of their game and Musumeci was recently given a surprise invite to the 2022 ADCC world championships. Martinez has not yet been invited to the tournament but there is still room left in the 66kg division and he has been invited to editions in the past.
