Mikey Musumeci put his flyweight submission grappling title on the line against Jarred Brooks at ONE Fight Night 13 on August 4th, 2023. Brooks actually already knew how it feels to challenge for a title as he previously won the ONE Championship bantamweight MMA title. Musumeci was coming into the title-defense with laser focus though and as the reigning champion and grappling specialist, he was the heavy favorite leading up to the match. They started out somewhat unusually, with Musumeci clearly trying to bait Brooks into taking his leg so that he could end up in guard.
Brooks did eventually took the bait and landed a takedown easily, using great positional control to shut down Musumeci’s movements off his back. Musumeci spent about a minute trying to set up attacks from full guard before Brooks exploded upwards and tried to pass quickly. Musumeci used K-guard to hit a slick entry to the legs, but Brooks defended well and freed his knee-line to come up on top. Musumeci continued working from closed guard and although it took a little while, he was able to invert and get close to exposing Brooks’ heel.
Brooks disengaged quickly though and got to standing, trying to cartwheel pass as Musumeci scooted forward. Musumeci countered the pass and forced Brooks onto his back by attacking the legs once again, getting a deep heel hook attempt in this time. Brooks cleared the legs and managed to escape but gave up top position in doing so. Mikey Musumeci slid into mount and transitioned to the back as soon as Brooks gave him an inch of space, locking up a body-triangle in a beautiful sequence at ONE Fight Night 13.
Brooks was doing a great job of defending the choke and handfighting but he spent well over a minute with Musumeci on his back while he was trying to escape. They stayed static there long enough for the referee to reset them to standing, something Brooks was clearly happy about. Musumeci did the same thing as the start of the fight and gave up his leg to bait the takedown, pulling guard when Brooks took hold of it. Musumeci went back to working from closed guard again, using an overhook to try and counteract the heavy passing game of Brooks.
Musumeci eventually set up a triangle choke with that overhook, locking it up on the opposite side to the traditional version so that he could start attacking Brooks’ arm. Brooks kept his arm underneath Musumeci to defend the choke but Musumeci slowly exposed it and locked up a tight armbar, cranking on it to get the tap. Mikey Musumeci wasn’t the only elite grappler competing at ONE Fight Night 13 either, although the others experienced mixed results. Tye Ruotolo started out by putting in a dominant performance in his match, but Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida registered the first loss of his MMA career later in the night.
