Mikey Musumeci had just started calling out what might be his next opponent on social media, publicly challenging Dillon Danis to a grappling match. It would be an unusual matchup to say the least, and not just because they are several weight classes apart. Musumeci has challenged heavier opponents and done absolute divisions in the past, so that would actually be the smallest hurdle to clear. There’s no way that Danis could make the bantamweight limit so Musumeci’s UFC BJJ title wouldn’t be available, and the match would have to take place either at openweight or at least welterweight given Danis’ history.
If this was just a few months ago then there’d also be some doubt about whether Danis would ever want to compete in Jiu-Jitsu again, but he’s already announced his comeback against Craig Jones at CJI 3. Instead, the biggest problem when it comes to booking this match would be the promotion it would have to take place in. Musumeci is signed to UFC BJJ exclusively and Danis has been banned from attending UFC events after getting into a brawl at UFC 322. It wouldn’t be the first time that the promotion has gone back on something that they’ve announced publicly though and Dana White is famously fickle, so it’s not impossible.
The idea of a match between Musumeci and Danis only came about after Musumeci made his most recent title-defense against Shay Montague at UFC BJJ 5. Danis left a comment on social media and didn’t seem to be impressed by Musumeci’s opponent:
“[It’s] messed up you doing the guy who just dropped off my uber eats like that.”
Musumeci responded quickly and he knew exactly how to settle the score between them:
“Hey Dillon [Danis], how about we have a grappling match? You talk all this sh*t on all my posts, let’s just grapple each other. Maybe you’re physically bigger than me, but my balls are bigger than yours. Let me know if you’re down.”
Mikey Musumeci issued his challenge to Dillon Danis in a recent post to his official Instagram account:
