Dave Mustaine is not only the frontman for one of the world’s most popular Metal bands, Megadeth, but he is also a newly-promoted BJJ brown belt. Mustaine is actually a veteran martial artist and already holds a pair of black belts in striking arts, Taekwondo and Ukidokan Karate. He also has a fair amount of experience in both Sanshou and Kickboxing, while held in high regard in the Taekwondo community specifically after being awarded with the title of ‘Goodwill Ambassador of the World’ by the World Taekwondo Federation.
When Mustaine discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he quickly decided to dive into the grappling martial art head-first. After several years of dedicated training, he was actually promoted to purple belt in BJJ back at the beginning of 2021 when he was already 59 years old. Now, after almost two years as a purple belt, Dave Mustaine has received his next promotion to brown belt in BJJ by the same coach who awarded him his previous belt; Reggie Almeida of Gracie Barra Spring Hill. The good news comes almost a month after Mustaine celebrated his sixty-first birthday and makes him one of many high-profile figures in the music industry to reach the higher ranks of BJJ.
It’s actually been a fantastic week for Mustaine in all areas of his life as Megadeth also released their sixteenth studio album, ‘The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!’. This is the band’s first release in over six years, the longest period of recording inactivity that they have ever gone through, while Mustaine actually battled his way through throat cancer. Having come out of the other side of that, it’s great to see Mustaine back doing the work that he loves and enjoying his hobbies as well.
