Medusa 5 took place on December 28th, 2023 and the women’s bantamweight Combat Jiu-Jitsu tournament delivered some fantastic results. There were plenty of great submission finishes and more than a few surprises as the night wore on, with the first one coming just before the quarter-finals began. Alex Enriquez was the favorite to take home the title as the reigning champion since Medusa 4 earlier this year, and she looked like she was going to make good on that promise when she won her first match.
Gillian Noll was her opponent in the opening round and although she lost, she gave Enriquez a very tough match along the way. Enriquez actually suffered an injury during their match and couldn’t compete in the quarter-final, meaning that Noll still progressed regardless. She put in two amazing performances at that point, submitting Taylor Mauldin with an arm-triangle choke from the bottom and beating ADCC Trials winner Peyton Letcher in EBI overtime. Jennifer Rivera was equally impressive on the other side of the bracket, showing mastery of the spiderweb position by submitting all three of her opponents with armbars in EBI overtime.
Those results set up a superb final match at Medusa 5 between Noll and Rivera, with both women giving it everything they had to come away with the title. Noll proved to be the only woman in the bracket who had an answer for Rivera when the match went to EBI overtime, as she was able to escape the spiderweb position twice. Although Noll couldn’t get the finish when she had her chance to do so, she was able to hit the quicker escapes and maintain control for longer. With the difference in ride-time, Noll was crowned the Medusa 5 bantamweight Combat Jiu-Jitsu champion.
