Mayssa Bastos made her ONE Championship debut in very impressive fashion at ONE Fight Night 20 on March 8th, 2024, as she managed to come away with a decision win. Bastos was facing off against one of the top BJJ competitors in Asia right now, Kanae Yamada, and she put on a vintage display of the elite grappling skills that she’s become known for throughout her career. This should come as no surprise seeing as Bastos has been on an incredible run of form over the last year or so, and she’s been able to beat all of the biggest names in her weight class on the way to winning both the Abu Dhabi World Pro and the coveted IBJJF grand slam in 2023.

Now that Bastos has been successful against a tough opponent in her first outing for ONE Championship, she’ll no doubt be looking to move up the promotion’s rankings quickly. She competed in the atomweight division and although ONE Championship is still building out most of it’s submission grappling divisions, this weight class already has a reigning champion. Danielle Kelly won the inaugural atomweight title at ONE Fight Night 14 and considering that the division is relatively thin right now, Bastos might have just made enough of a case to be booked as her first title-defense.

If the matchmakers at ONE Championship still want to see more from Bastos then she could just as easily be matched against Jessa Khan, who is coming off a loss to Danielle Kelly in the division’s first title-fight. Either way, Mayssa Bastos has proven that she can deliver action-packed matches and the win in her promotional debut at ONE Fight Night 20 should be enough to earn her another chance to compete for them. Even if they can’t match her against Kelly or Khan, the promotion has plenty of elite MMA fighters and Sambo world champions who would be interested in taking on Bastos in a grappling match.
