Matt Serra is an MMA legend but he went viral back in 2018 long after his career had come to an end, because he was involved in a public altercation with a drunk man and restrained him with ease. Not only was that a classic example of somebody choosing the absolute worst person to start a fight with, it was also notable for the unusual timing. It was actually the night before Serra was going to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, and he was out at a restaurant for food. Things went pretty much exactly as you’d expect, and it took just a few seconds for him to restrain his attacker completely.
He recently took part in an interview with fellow former UFC world champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and that was just one of the topics they discussed. He reflected on the incident and his first thought was about how Jiu-Jitsu was the thing that helped him in that moment:
“This is a great advertisement for Jiu-Jitsu. I don’t exactly look like Quinton Jackson, but I don’t look like a f***ing p****. So for this guy to call me out in front of my wife and kids… What if I didn’t know how to handle myself? That could be f***ing devastating.”
Serra also explained how the incident ended up being filmed in the first place, and he gave his perspective on how it all unfolded:
“I tell my sister, ‘Sammy, go film this, because you know what’s gonna happen after, the guy’s gonna claim I attacked him.’ So she filmed it, you know I mounted him, he’s telling me he’s gonna f**k me up, I got him by the wrist, I’m laughing”
