ONE 170 took place on January 24th, 2025 and the event featured the return of BJJ legend Marcelo Garcia, against fellow veteran Masakazu Imanari. Even though it was actually one of the first few matches on the card, it was also one of the most hotly-anticipated as well. Ever since the promotion first announced that Garcia would be making his return against Imanari, grappling fans around the world have been waiting with bated breath. The two men were both eager to put on a show and they went at it right from the start, demonstrating that this was excellent matchmaking from ONE Championship.
Garcia pressured Imanari against the cage early and hit a single-leg to take up top position in half-guard. Imanari tried to use the lockdown to create an opening but Garcia stayed tight to him and dealt with the threat comfortably. Garcia hit a quick backstep pass and Imanari tried to recover, but Garcia settled into side control. He drove his knee across Imanari’s stomach and controlled from there, eventually sliding it over into mount with a head-and-arm control. Garcia stepped off when Imanari defended, briefly setting up a reverse head-and-arm choke before transitioning to a north-south choke for the finish.
