Marcelo Garcia is a Jiu-Jitsu legend and he’s shared the mats with pretty much all of the greatest competitors of his generation, so it should be very hard for him to pick out the toughest opponent he ever faced. He has the added benefit of having competed in the absolute division throughout his career as well, so he’s experienced what it feels like to face the top competitors from several weight classes above his own as well. With so many different elite grapplers to choose from, it was surprising to hear that Garcia knew exactly who to pick as soon as we asked him.
We wanted to know if there were any particular achievements that stood out during his competitive career, and that was when he mentioned one specific opponent:
“So I have a lot of like good opponents based in my division and in the absolute, but one of them probably was Roger (Gracie). Every time I competed against Roger I knew he was going to bring a very good Jiu-Jitsu and not only good Jiu-Jitsu, but I know he’s a Gracie so he learned probably the best Jiu-Jitsu possible, and he’s a big guy too. So I had a lot of those challenges.”
Roger is most people’s choice for the greatest grappler of all time so it’s no surprise that Marcelo Garcia thought he was his toughest opponent. The size difference between them was obviously a factor, but Roger was also known for beating all of the best heavyweights of that era as well. Garcia reflected on their matches together and he was happy with his performance:
“I just remember him as my toughest opponent because I never beat him. I competed against him twice and I lost both of them but I feel like, especially one of them, I feel like I gave a good fight for him.”
