BJJ legend Marcelo Garcia has just shared an update on his ongoing cancer treatment with his fans, and the news is positive! The Jiu-Jitsu community was shocked earlier on in the year when Garcia revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer and was going to begin treatment in order to deal with it. Although it hasn’t been too long since then, it has no doubt been a tough road to recovery for the ADCC Hall of Fame grappler. He’s had to undergo both chemotherapy and surgical intervention but according to the recent update he’s provided, it’s all been successful so far.
Marcelo Garcia is not quite done with the cancer treatment just yet, as he revealed that he still has 4 more chemotherapy sessions left before he’s done. He even mentioned that he’s looking forward to returning to the mats and getting back into training, which is no surprise seeing as his love for Jiu-Jitsu is well-known. In fact, one of the most famous quotes from Garcia is:
“I wasn’t a good student and even now I never say that I am better than anybody, but I know I love Jiu-Jitsu more than anybody. I love the energy, and that it gets deeper the more you study.”
Not only does Garcia have a whole gym full of top competitors that he personally has helped develop into fantastic grapplers over the years, but he also regularly gets high-level visitors too. Even after he stopped competing professionally, Garcia was still able get sparring rounds in with BJJ legends like Eddie Bravo. It isn’t just his own students and retired competitors like himself that he trains with either. Garcia has often played host to the current generation of elite grapplers like Tye Ruotolo too, as many of them seek out his advice.
