Mackenzie Dern just reached the highest point of her MMA career at UFC 321 on October 25th, 2025, as she has now become the reigning UFC strawweight world champion. She was up against an old rival in Virna Jandiroba, as they shared the cage almost 5 years ago. Dern won a unanimous decision back then but Jandiroba has gone on a lengthy winning streak, so this fight made perfect sense when the strawweight title was vacated. Although Dern was the favorite coming into the fight, she was open about some of her weaknesses during the build-up and Jandiroba had the right skillset to exploit them.
Dern showed some huge improvements in her striking at UFC 321 though, working behind a steady jab that scored big for her throughout every round. She won the majority of the striking exchanges and although Jandiroba did get the fight to the ground at various points, Dern remained dangerous from the bottom too. She stifled any offense that Jandiroba had on the ground and beat her by a decent margin on the feet, winning a decision on all three judges’ scorecards. There was another title on the line after that, but it proved to be an anticlimactic main event as Cyril Gane hit Tom Aspinall with an accidental eyepoke and the fight was ruled a no contest after less than a round.
