There was a number of rear-naked choke finishes at UFC 269 but the most surprising of all came in the co-main event when Julianna Pena submitted Amanda Nunes to take home the UFC women’s Bantamweight world championship. Things started just as many people expected when Nunes and Pena were fighting on the feet but fans slowly started to realise that Pena wasn’t reacting the way most other women have in the past, and was actually standing and trading with the reigning Bantamweight and Featherweight world champion. Not just that, but as the fight moved on Pena was actually starting to win those exchanges and Nunes looked visibly hurt by the high volume of strikes she was receiving.

By the time the fight went to the ground in the second round, Nunes looked exhausted and battered, with the finish looking as though it was coming. Pena forced her to tap with a rear-naked choke after a little over three minutes of action in the second round to shock fans in the arena and at home in winning the Bantamweight world title. Shortly after that, Charles Oliveira did what most people would’ve expected when he successfully defended his title against Dustin Poirier shortly after by securing the exact same choke early in the third round.
