JitsCast #60 features Shane Curtis, one of the most popular and unorthodox competitors on the UK Jiu-Jitsu circuit. He’s made a name for himself by being both entertaining and having a unique approach to what would normally be considered disadvantageous positions in the sport. Curtis is best known for popularising what he calls the Goth Lock and the sequence of attacks that he’s built around it, all coming from bottom side control. This has also made Curtis a very dangerous opponent for everyone he faces, as he’s able to present an offensive threat from positions where his opponents would normally feel most safe.
Jits Magazine spoke to Curtis about his career competing on the Polaris stage, including his late-notice appearance in their welterweight grand prix. He explained how the opportunity to step in on just one day’s notice came to him, and looked back on his match with Levi Jones-Leary in the opening round. He also talked about his upcoming match with fellow UK veteran black belt competitor Shane Price at Polaris 35, and briefly spoke about his preparation for it. Curtis also revealed what he could about the rest of his plans for 2026, ranging from superfights to ADCC Trials and seminars around the country.
Curtis also explained why he has a preference for taking individual superfights rather than entering tournaments, and why he has focused on no gi matches over gi matches in recent years. He also looked back on his biggest competitive appearance last year, which was his entry into the welterweight tournament at EBI 26. Curtis talked about his journey to Mexico and why he found it to be such a bad experience, along with discussing his weight-cut openly. He also shed some light on how he prepared for the EBI ruleset specifically, and how he actually prefers to learn new techniques in general.
