JitsCast #59 features Teshya Alo, a rising star in Jiu-Jitsu right now who already has a lot of experience competing at the highest level of other grappling sports. Alo might have started a professional Jiu-Jitsu career fairly late in life, but she came into it as an elite wrestler with a Judo black belt. Alo is a lifelong grappler with four High School State wrestling titles, and she has made it on to Team USA twice during her career. When she made the decision to transition to Jiu-Jitsu she immediately made an impact and has since beaten some of the best competitors in the sport.
Jits Magazine spoke to Alo about her wrestling and Judo background, and how she was able to find such success while training and competing in Hawaii. She spoke about her early experiences with Jiu-Jitsu when she was just a child and explained why she chose to focus more on wrestling over Judo back then. Alo shared her thoughts on what made her so different to other young grapplers, giving some credit to her younger sister Teniya Alo who has been her training partner for virtually her entire life and the coaches who pushed her throughout her career.
Alo also revealed how she found her transition to Jiu-Jitsu and what encouraged her to make that switch in the first place. She even shared the story of the first match of her competitive Jiu-Jitsu career as an adult, which was against a very young Helena Crevar. This has led her into something of a full-circle moment, as she will now be getting a rematch against Crevar on the biggest stage she’s ever set foot on. Alo will face Crevar at ONE Fight Night 39 and although it’s been several years since their first match, she’s still eager to get a win over her and she shared a little about her gameplan.
