JitsCast #48 features multiple-time ADCC Trials winner and one of the top light-heavyweight grapplers in the world over the last few years, Mason Fowler. Not only does Fowler hold wins over some of the biggest names in the sport, but he has also held a number of impressive titles too. He was the longest-running Submission Underground absolute champion and remains the champion if the promotion ever returns, but his biggest achievement came much more recently. Fowler won the inaugural UFC BJJ light-heavyweight world title at UFC BJJ 2, and he is one of just a handful of champions that the promotion has crowned so far.
Jits Magazine spoke to Fowler about his experience competing for UFC BJJ so far, and he explained why he actually chose that particular promotion to sign with. Fowler is one of a handful of elite competitors who has committed himself to a single organisation by signing an exclusive contract, and he also took the time to share his thoughts on this new development in the sport. Many popular figures in the BJJ world have publicly opposed the use of exclusive contracts but most of the athletes who have signed them have remained fairly quiet about it, so Fowler was able to give us a unique insight.
Fowler also talked about his vision for the future of the sport, and how he thinks exclusive contracts might actually end up being beneficial to athletes as long as they have the ability to negotiate with multiple promotions. Fowler then spoke about his own personal future as the UFC BJJ light-heavyweight champion, picking out the three opponents who he would most like to defend his title against next. He also considered a fee other options and briefly hinted at a potential move up to heavyweight to become a double champion if things work out well for him over the next year or so.
