JitsCast #42 features one of the most talented Canadian competitors around right now and a BJJ black belt under Dante Leon; rising star Max Hanson. He’s been quietly working his way to the top of the sport over the last few years, winning titles in multiple promotions from all around the US. Hanson doesn’t just stick to the lightweight division either, he’s won matches across several weight classes and against significantly bigger opponents. With each performance he gained more notoriety and even bigger opportunities moving forward, right the way up to making his debut on the biggest stage in the sport at ADCC 2024.
Jits Magazine spoke to Hanson about his rise to the top of the sport, starting from humble beginnings on the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu scene. He spoke about how difficult it was to become an elite competitor in a country without many of them around, and how an early connection with Leon helped to raise his game. Hanson also revealed that he was originally afraid of competition when he was a colored belt, and explained how he was eventually able to overcome that fear. Then right up to present day, he discussed his big win over Gianni Grippo at WNO 29 and why he believes it’s better to be a generalist than a specialist.
Finally Hanson spoke at length about the biggest project that he has on the horizon, being a part of the CJI 2 lineup. He will be occupying the lightest position at under 66kg and he is one of five men chosen to represent Pedigo Submission Fighting, which also happens to be one of the few teams made up entirely of their own competitors. Obviously he has a huge challenge ahead of him as the lightest competitor on the team, but he also explained why he doesn’t mind facing bigger opponents. Hanson also shared his thoughts on the tactical element of the Quintet ruleset, speaking from his own experience.
