JitsCast #22 features Australian Jiu-Jitsu legend Kit Dale. Not only was dale an incredibly accomplished competitor during his time in the sport but he was also one of the earliest proponents of ecological training methods, or task-based games as he calls it. He was one of the most successful BJJ competitors to come out of Australia at the time he was active and he shared the mats with many of the best in the world. Dale left the sport as quickly as he broke through and he moved on to other challenges, including a career in the film industry as both an actor and a writer.
Dale retired from competition almost entirely in 2018 and other than a handful of matches he hadn’t competed at all from 2021 until very recently, when he made his return at Subversiv: Fight Club 1. Dale defeated his opponent, Blake Bilder, and announced during the post-match interview that he was going to be releasing a BJJ film later this year. We wanted to speak to him about his upcoming film, White Belt, and find out more about how he came up with the ideas for the comedy and how his transition in to the world of film has gone over the last few years.
Dale also spoke about his Jiu-Jitsu career at length, from his earliest days coming into the sport from an Australian-rules football background all the way up to his decision to leave it. No conversation with Dale can avoid the topic of training methods either, as he was one of the first people to advocate a move away from drilling. He shared how he first began on the task-based games approach and even included some of his more controversial opinions as well. Dale also revealed his plans for the rest of 2025, including a desire to compete more again and new BJJ instructionals releases.
