JitsCast #20 features top prospect and newly-promoted BJJ black Sebastian Attard, ahead of the biggest match of his career so far. Attard has been building a solid reputation in Australia over the last few years and was one of the country’s best-kept secrets, but he burst on to the international scene in 2024. He was still a brown belt at the time but he got the call to join the roster for PGF Season 7, and that represented a huge opportunity for him to test himself against some of the best in the world. Attard was able to shed some light in how he found that experience, echoing similar sentiments from other promotional veterans.
Attard was also able to make good on his promise in his Who’s Number One debut at WNO 25 later on in the year, and he’s eager to get back on a big show like that as soon as he can. Attard was also part of one of the biggest talking-points of the year, as he jokingly swore at the man who beat him in the final of the IBJJF No Gi World Championship 2024 as a brown belt. It was clearly done in jest and his opponent didn’t seem to feel any ill will at all, even laughing along after it.
What came next is what caused a stir, as the IBJJF decided to ban him from competition for one year as a result of the gesture. Attard spoke to us about that experience and shared his thoughts on the suspension, along with explaining his plans for that year-long period. He also spoke to us about his upcoming title-fight with ADCC veteran Izaak Michell at Subversion: Paradigm, which will be the toughest single match of his career so far. Attard explained some of his preparation for the match, and assessed some of the strengths and weaknesses that he and Michell have.
