JitsCast #11 features Zach Maslany, the founder of Finishers Sub-Only. Maslany has been one of the most successful professional Jiu-Jitsu promoters in North America, running dozens of events over several years. The promotion occupies an impressive space in no gi grappling, as one of the most prestigious events outside of the very biggest in the world like Who’s Number One and UFC Fight Pass Invitational. Over the years they have played host to a huge number of the biggest stars in the sport when they were early on in their respective careers, and Maslany is well-known for his tireless efforts to grow the sport.
Maslany took a little time to explain how he first started in Jiu-Jitsu, including the early days of his MMA career and travelling to learn from 10th Planet founder Eddie Bravo. Maslany then explained how he got into the promotional aspect of the sport and how he’s been able to have so much success in a position that many people have failed in. That led to some very interesting insights into how Maslany approaches being a combat sports promoter, and he shared several pieces of great advice for anyone who might be looking to get into that line of work.
Maslany’s fantastic work as a promoter led to him being selected as one of five judges for the inaugural Craig Jones Invitational. That was another element of his career that we wanted to learn more about, and he was happy to share a behind-the-scenes look at that role. Although we discussed his work as a judge in general terms, we also wanted to talk about one specific match from the Craig Jones Invitational 2024 where several fans have vocally disagreed with the judging. That was actually the final of the under 80kg division, where Kade Ruotolo defeated Levi Jones-Leary to win the million-dollar grand prize.
