The IBJJF no gi world championships 2021 were a massive hit with competitors and fans alike, with this being the first time that heelhooks have been allowed at the event. It appears as though it’s led to a massive shakeup in the status quo as five of the men’s division winners had never won a world championship until now. While there were a number of heelhook finishes throughout the event, many of the sport’s top competitors are not that new to the technique and have competed under more liberal rulesets on numerous occasions in the past. The two best performances of the weekend came from the breakout female star of 2020 Rafaela Guedes and recently-promoted black belt Pedro Marinho, who both came away from the event with two world championships to their name after winning both their weight and the absolute division.
