The IBJJF No Gi European Championship 2023 took place from October 26th to 29th, 2023 and the results featured some of the best IBJJF competitors from all around the world. ADCC veteran Heikki Jussila won the biggest prize by taking home a gold medal from the absolute division, but he couldn’t leave with a perfect record as he lost the final of the ultra-heavyweight division to Felipe Figueiredo. There were notable champions everywhere, with Edwin ‘Junny’ Ocasio and Sebastian Rodriguez winning gold at light-featherweight and medium-heavyweight respectively.
Julian Espinosa won gold at featherweight after beating Sam McNally in the final, cutting short an incredible run by male Irish competitors at the event. Shay Montague won the roosterweight division and Marcus Phelan stood on top of the podium at lightweight though, so there was still some fantastic results for Ireland at the IBJJF No Gi European Championship 2023. The biggest names actually competed in the middleweight division though, where Tommy Langaker beat Mateusz Szczecinski in the final while Lucas Protasio and Tarik Hopstock won the bronze medals.
The women’s divisions of the IBJJF No Gi European Championship 2023 were equally exciting, and they also featured a strong Irish presence as Rosa Walsh won the middleweight division. There were several big names coming from outside of Europe to win gold as well, with Mara Kelly and Adele Fornarino winning light-featherweight and featherweight respectively. Maria Claudia won the lightweight division and Elizabeth Mitrovic won gold in an incredibly tough division at medium-heavyweight. The bronze medals in that division went to Joanna Dineva and Salla Simola, who both returned to win bronze medals in the absolute too. Roberta Ribeiro was the woman who won the absolute division though, shortly after she took a default gold medal at super-heavyweight.
