The IBJJF No Gi Brazilian National Championship 2023 took place on September 24th, 2023 and the event attracted some of the best grapplers from around the country and far beyond it’s borders. One of the most impressive achievements came in the roosterweight division, where Shay Montague became the first Scottish competitor to take home a gold medal from the event. He wasn’t the only foreigner to emerge victorious though, as Aurelie Le Vern brought a pair of gold medals back to France after winning both the heavyweight division and the absolute.
The men’s absolute division was won by Daniel Ribeiro, although he settled for a bronze medal at ultra-heavyweight after Antonio de Padua reached top of that podium. There was plenty of other top competitors too, with Rafael Paganini winning medium-heavyweight and Charles Negromonte winning heavyweight. Even the lighter divisions were stacked with talent; Felipe Machado won a gold medal at light-featherweight, Ruan Alvarenga stood on top of the lightweight podium, and Ygor Rodrigues emerged victorious at middleweight.
The women’s divisions were just as busy, and Le Vern wasn’t the only top competitor in the heavier weight classes either. The super-heavyweight division was won by Mikaela Barros, and Julia Boscher put in some fantastic work to win gold at middleweight. Vitoria Assis managed to beat some tough competition in order to win the featherweight division, while light-featherweight was the lightest division that ran at this event and Jessica Dantas managed to take home the gold medal there.
