There’s been a change of plan for the upcoming ONE Championship grappling match between Helena Crevar and Teshya Alo, as it will now be contested at openweight. Everything else about the match remains the same, and it will still go ahead at ONE Fight Night 39 on January 23rd, 2026. The change has been announced just one day before the two women step onto the mats, and they reportedly agreed to it on very short notice. The match was originally announced for the bantamweight division, which is actually 145lbs instead of 135lbs at ONE Championship due to their rules around hydration testing.
When the weigh-ins were conducted, it became immediately clear that it was only one half of the matchup that needed to remove the agreed weight-limit. Alo weighed in at 137.8lbs and passed the hydration test, coming in at over 7lbs lighter than the maximum originally allowed. Crevar on the other hand actually failed her initial hydration test and had to undergo a second one, which she did then pass. At her second weigh-in with a passed hydration test, Crevar was recorded at 161.6lbs. That puts her at over 16lbs over the originally-agreed limit and just under 24lbs heavier than Alo on the day.
As with any match, both women will likely step on to the mat a little heavier than what they weighed in at, but it’s clear that Crevar will have a sizeable weight advantage over Alo. Crevar hasn’t had any issue making 145lbs in the past and she even won CJI 2 at that weight just a few months ago. It’s not clear just yet if there’s any specific reason behind the match moving to openweight but as with many Americans and Europeans competing for ONE Championship, there’s a fairly lengthy journey for both Crevar and Alo to make and that has played a role in other high-profile weight-misses or last-minute changes in the past.
Nick Atkin announced the news that Helena Crevar vs Teshya Alo had been moved to openweight on short notice in a recent post to his official Twitter account:
