It looks like Gordon Ryan will be making an appearance at UFC 309, as he will be coaching Jon Jones as one of several men in his corner. It’s a huge moment for Jones, as he will be attempting to defend the heavyweight world championship for the first time when he faces Stipe Miocic in the main event. It makes sense then that he has taken every possible step to ensure that he has the best training camp possible leading up to the fight and that has included bringing in a number of elite competitors and coaches from different martial arts.
Jones brought in Ryan and other several specialists like Gable Steveson to help him prepare for the fight with Miocic, but the elite grappler will also be supporting him when the cage door closes too. Gordon Ryan and Jon Jones have been sparring together for over a year now and given that fans haven’t seen Jones in action during that time, it’ll be interesting to see how his grappling has developed at UFC 309. Jones already had fantastic wrestling and has used that to great effect throughout his career, winning clean decisions and even submitting a number of legendary fighters like Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort.
There isn’t a lot to go on yet of course, but all signs are pointing to yet another dominant performance by Jones at UFC 309. He’s one of the greatest MMA fighters in the history of the sport and although Miocic is a heavyweight legend himself, he’s also a few years older than Jones. The recent preparation that Jones has gone through may well have taken him to a whole new level as well, and he seems confident of that himself. Jones is so confident in his grappling in fact that he recently revealed that he was considering competing at ADCC 2026.
