Gordon Ryan is one of the greatest grapplers in the history of the sport and he recently revealed exactly how much he charges for private lessons. It’s a rare insight into the market in fact, as the majority of elite competitors choose to keep that information quiet. It’s fairly straightforward to find out the other end of the scale, as most local coaches sill be completely open about their fees. For anyone looking to train with the very best there is, it can be tough to budget for it outside of seminars or BJJ training camps because of how little information is out there.
Ryan explained that he currently charges between $1,000 and $1,200 for an hour with a group of up to 4 people, but he did give the caveat that it might increase soon if demand increases. Given that he’s recently opened up the Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu HQ in Austin, Texas and dozens of grapplers have travelled there to train with him and his teammates, he’ll have no shortage of interested parties. Even outside of his academy, Austin has become a Jiu-Jitsu hub over the last few years and there’s plenty of people training nearby or travelling to the area who would love to learn from Ryan.
There are many people who would think that a four-figure sum is too much for an hour of Jiu-Jitsu, but there are genuinely only a handful of men on the planet with Ryan’s knowledge. The value of private lessons in general is debatable of course, but anyone who comes in with a plan and has the dedication to work on the information given over time is going to get use out of them. Even elite competitors like Demian Maia have said that a private lesson with the right person has completely changed their game. With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine that there are many people more capable of changing your game than Ryan.
Gordon Ryan revealed the amount he charges for private lessons and his current availability in a recent post to his official Instagram account:
