The UFC have just announced that MMA legend and two-weight UFC world champion Georges St-Pierre will be making his return to professional grappling competition at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 6. The event is scheduled to take place on December 14th, 2023 and there’s no other matches confirmed as yet, but if past events are anything to go by then it’s probably going to be a fantastic card. The opponent that St-Pierre will be facing hasn’t been confirmed yet either, and it’ll be interesting to see if the promotion decides to match him against another MMA veteran or if he’ll be challenging himself against an elite grappler.
The upcoming match at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 6 will mark the very first time that Georges St-Pierre has been seen in competition since he decided to retire from professional MMA after UFC 217. He won the promotion’s middleweight world championship against Michael Bisping at that event in 2017, and even that was his first fight in 4 years. By the time he steps on the mats at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 6, that fight against Bisping will be his only combat sports match in a little over a decade.
It’s been even longer since fans last saw Georges St-Pierre compete in pure grappling too, as that was all the way back at ADCC 2005 when he entered the 77kg division. He won his first match on points and was submitted in the second, bringing his professional grappling record to 1-1. Despite the incredibly long time away from the sport, St-Pierre is known for being one of the few competitors who stays in perfect shape all year round and he’s never stopped training even in retirement. He’s been open about potential returns to grappling in recent years, particularly for a match against Khabib Nurmagomedov, so it’ll be interesting to see just how good he looks once he steps on the mats again.
The original announcement that Georges St-Pierre will be returning to professional grappling competition at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 6 was made as part of the UFC International Fight Week broadcast, although it was later confirmed in a post to the promotion’s official Instagram account:
