Thanks to our recent partnership with REVGEAR, Jits Magazine have been able to get their hands on their Sub Hunter Gi in order to review it for our readers. REVGEAR have an extensive history in both BJJ and MMA, and the brand have been making equipment for both sports for a very long time now. They actually offer several different gis and a very wide range of no gi equipment, but we took the time to test out one particular gi that they offer in order to give our readers a honest opinion of how it holds up.
REVGEAR Sub Hunter Gi Review
The Sub Hunter gi is at the higher end of the scale for REVGEAR in terms of price so for anyone looking for a basic or cheaper model, it’s worth looking at the other products they offer instead. For anyone who’s spent a few years in the sport, they’re almost certainly already comfortable with spending around the $100 or £100 price-point for a gi. With that in mind, we tested out the Sub Hunter gi over a period of several weeks across dozens of training sessions and compared it to the competitors from other brands at roughly the same price-point.
Design
The Sub Hunter gi comes in black with military green stitching and highlights, giving it a clean dark look. That helps the yellow Sub Hunter patch and white REVGEAR logo on opposing shoulders to really pop, while the US flag embroidered in gold on the bottom of the jacket really helps bring the overall design together. The inside of the jacket has camo lining around the top and the yellow Sub Hunter logo printed, and the trousers have the Sub Hunter patch repeated again opposite a smaller REVGEAR logo. The overall look is solid, it’s a coherent and sleek design that isn’t overdone and well worth the price.
Details
The REVGEAR Sub Hunter Gi weighs 4lbs so it’s pretty light, but it’s still thick enough to be durable. That means it can be worn as a competition gi when cutting weight, or as a comfortable regular gi for hard training sessions. The jacket is 450GSM with reinforced seams and the trousers use 10 ounce ripstop fabric, all of which makes the gi very resistant to tearing. The old school lapel will likely be a welcome feature for more experienced grapplers as well, as it’s not something you can find all that often any more and many people would prefer it.
REVGEAR Sub Hunter Gi Review Conclusion
The Sub Hunter gi might be one of the more expensive gis that REVGEAR offer, but the difference in quality is obvious when you actually use it. It was put through rigorous testing by Robson Gracie Jr among other experienced BJJ practitioners and clearly the brand has put a lot of effort in delivering a product that’s worth the price. At the full price of $129 on their North American site and £119.99 on their European site, the Sub Hunter gi is still far from the most expensive on the market too. It’s still affordable compared to the most expensive brands out there and if someone’s looking to trade up from the most basic models then they really couldn’t do any better.
